Traditional Colonial addition breaks ground

August 02, 2025 – We’re excited to report that Traditional Colonial Addition has broken-ground in the Highland-Kessler neighborhood in Indy!

We began collaborating with our client on this fun + challenging opportunity in early 2024.  Having done a ton of thinking and research prior to engaging, our client was able to articulate their overall aesthetic preferences on day one (traditional exterior, colonial maximalist interior); a modern lifestyle in a traditional framework.

The further we engaged, the richer the design solution, details, and finish palette became.  We can’t wait to share this inspired story (maybe our most-elaborate kitchen design ever), so please check-back on the HAUS project page for updates to the design + the WERK project page for construction process updates!

Announcing River Habitat House

July 10, 2025 (Fennville, Michigan) – Behind-the-scenes we’ve been working with our clients on River Habitat House since early 2024. Having built their existing LEED-certified home in 2005 in Holland, Michigan on the banks of Lake Michigan, they are ready now for a single-level home softer on-the-feet (ie, no concrete floors this time).

The site has a gradual elevation overlooking the Kalamazoo River, has amazing natural habitat, and affords breathtaking panoramic views. Our client made it clear that they are interested in designing something for their particular lifestyle, not something that needs to cater to the general public for resale reasons.

HAUS recognized as Top 200 American Residential Architect (Forbes)

October 30, 2024 – We are honored to be recognized by Forbes as a Top 200 American Residential Architect.

The list identifies and calls to attention those architects whose work, region-to-region, and state-to-state, stand apart for their elevated degree of overall excellence.

Back40House

Top 200 designation is based on a rigorous journalistic fact-finding and assessment, but with the noteworthy addition of direct involvement from an advisory board of leading experts in the American house.  A total of 18,000 architect offices were assessed for the degree to which the single-family house is a part of their total repertoire.  Those offices that advanced in the process provided work samples believed to be “exemplary” for the ways in which the work addresses the particulars of place.  Each submission was then measured in accordance with Forbes Architecture’s three-tiered system.

Based on the noted criteria, Forbes selected Back40House to represent HAUS on the Forbes website.

HAUS Projects Awarded at Indiana Landmarks Event

August 16, 2024 – Two HAUS projects were awarded by AIA Indiana at the AIA annual convention. Thornhurst Kitchen Revival and Holly Creek Overlook each received Merit Awards; one for Interior Architecture, and the other for New Construction.

Thanks to our clients for these amazing design opportunities. Thanks to WERK | Building Modern for overseeing that construction was consistent with design-intent. And finally, thanks to all of our trade contractor partners who help make these projects a reality!

HAUS Honored at Excellence in Architecture 2024

January 11, 2024 (Indianapolis) – We are happy to report that HAUS was honored at the 2024 AIA Indianapolis Excellence in Architecture Gala for G BLOC Modern Live + Work!

Of 39 submissions, G BLOC was one of 10 to receive recognition at the event hosted at Indiana Landmarks in Indianapolis’ Old Northside historic district. The project received a Merit Award for Architecture (New Construction – Project Cost Less Than $5 Million).

Thanks to all project collaborators, and AIA Indianapolis for organizing and hosting another outstanding event to support community-building!

HERS Rating for Brick Modern

Part of the process of well-designed and constructed homes is validating through a third-party.  We are experts in the design and detailing of homes but testing to ensure it is built well is important.  The Brick Modern House is a completely electric home when it comes to heating and cooling, including water heating.

Post-Construction testing gives the Brick Modern House a Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Index of 77 excluding the solar panels.  When accounting for the solar panels, the HERS Rating adjusts to 17!

The third-party energy rater asks us for input so they’re able to form a design baseline and then post-construction they perform a draft test to check for air leaks but also to pressurize the house and determine how tight (or not) the house is.  Contrary to what one might think, your house doesn’t need to breathe.  You, however, do need to breathe.

The approach to get fresh air into a home should be through a designed and measured location, not through random leaks in the exterior of your home.  If you’re interested in learning more about this, we’ll have more information to share under our ‘Topics’ tab.  For the Brick Modern House, we’ll track the energy usage to provide feedback to our energy modeling that we perform through the design process.

Powder Room Custom-Tiled Vanity

Check-out this powder room custom-tiled vanity at Brick Modern House.

We’ve integrated a lot of personal touches into this project that we look forward to sharing.  One such case is the custom-tiled vanity.

The design of the tiled sink meant really digging down into the details to ensure the tiled vanity cabinet was functional, including the drawer.

HAUS Awarded at Monumental – HAUS team was honored to receive two awards at the Monumental Awards Event at Tibbs Drive-In.

G BLOC Live + Work received an Achievement Award for Real Estate Development and also an Achievement Award for Neighborhood Revitalization.

Brick Modern House Completion

Brick Modern House, north of Broad Ripple in the Windcombe/Nora area, is substantially complete!

After an almost 12-month construction process that has been progressing alongside the Monon Trail, the Brick Modern House is now prepared to accept our clients for move-in.

HAUS has collaborated with the client from project inception, design concepts, architectural design, interior design, through construction.  Please check-out the project story, as we’ll be adding relevant details about the entire process from beginning-to-end!

Modern Residential Project wins AIA Indiana 2022 Design Award

We are grateful to have received a design award for Back40House in Pendleton, Indiana at the AIA Indiana Design Awards 2022.

Paul and our clients participated in the ceremony, with the project receiving a Citation Award for Architecture (New Construction – Project Cost Less Than $5 Million).

Thanks to Brad and Nan Hayes for the opportunity to collaborate with them on the project’s architectural design, interior design, and construction management.

AIA Excellence in Architecture 2022

HAUS received an AIA Excellence in Architecture 2022 Citation Award at last nights gala at Indiana State Museum.

Paul and Chris represented HAUS to receive the award for Bridge House, which has now received it’s second AIA award.

C & P got the opportunity to spend the day shooting Back40House on this beautiful fall day in Pendleton!

Chris was definitely in his element, with many prime opportunities to “wave his arms around“; sometimes while in conversation, and other times while motioning for Paul to reposition props.

Besides helping stage the shots, Paul enthusiastically interacted with people, spaces and dogs.  It was a good day all-around!

We’ve Moved to G BLOC!

We have moved our studio to G BLOC in Broad Ripple North Village right next to the Monon Trail!

It’s been a long COVID-influenced, socially-distanced 12 months, and we are very much looking forward to the future.  In fact, we are all back together in one space again!

Although we are still keeping socially distanced (for the most-part), it’s great to be able to communicate and collaborate with team members in-person again.

Bridge House Rough Framing Complete

We are happy to report that framers have completed most rough-framing at Bridge House.

February weather was “brutal”.  Now that windows are installed and with even colder weather coming, it’s time to focus on inside work.  Indeed, the upcoming week’s forecast says highs in the low-teens.  Let the craft rough-ins commence!

Colonial Modern Complete

Modern Colonial north of Coxhill Gardens in Carmel is now complete!

After about a 16-month construction process, the much anticipated move-in process finally began in late mid-October 2018.  For sure, after our clients have some time to get settled-in we’ll share more of the interiors.  In the meantime, we’ll be adding design process and renderings to the story as a placeholder.  HAUS helped client with comprehensive site planning and architectural design concepts, including a detailed interior design vision.
