This primary exterior elevation optimizes views to the Kalamazoo Rover on this site in Fennville, Michigan. Mass 1 on the left is inspired by red, historic barn structures in the area, while Mass 2 on the right represents a more modern interpretation. Both masses are elevated to maximize east-northeast views. Parallel Horizons garage and entries directly engage the highest site elevation along the west wooded setback. The two primary volumes are distinct and connected via glass-clad hallway. Looking south, we can see how Mass 2 projects to the north, elevated on concrete piers to maximize views to the Kalamazoo River. Outdoor shower mirrors the Main Bedroom Suite indoor shower. From an aerial perspective, we can see how the two masses clearly delineate between more public and more private spaces within the retreat. Even while elevated to maximize views and privacy, the design still allows ample opportunities to engage the outdoors view four separate deck areas.

River Habitat Retreat

Fennville, Michigan

The design for River Habitat Retreat, located in Fennville, Michigan is primarily inspired by the elevated woodland site, adjacent to the Kalamazoo River.

The design orientation works to optimize east, northeast views to the river and sunrise while maximizing privacy from the adjacent roadways.  Primary building massing is divided into two masses; one for living spaces, and another for studios and main bedroom suite.  Retreat entries engage from the highest property elevations, and while Mass 1 engages the sloping topography, Mass 2 hovers above, taking-in the most dramatic views.

This project is breaking-ground in 2025, so please check-back for updates to the story and background about the design process, which began in spring 2024.
